Codex Sinaiticus

Well it is finally coming on-line. Codex Sinaiticus, a very early copy of the New Testament, will release Psalms (It has some OT books too) and the book of Mark this Thursday. The rest of the books will follow. Conspicuously absent in this codex is the last chapter of Mark I believe. I want to check it out.

Here is a short reflection paper I wrote on the subject.

That is a pretty good treatment of the issue. I really hope you can get conservatives to consider the importance of textual criticism. I doubt it will do any good. But I'm just cynical and have given up all hope for christians.

I forgot there was even debate about this until just recently when i read an article about 12 people dying in one snake handling church in Kentucky last year. It's easy to get comfortable in my academic world. I just assumed everyone knew that Mark ends at 16:8. There is no debate in my mind Mark ended at 16:8.

If only conservatives knew a little text criticms they wouldn't be dying of all those poisonious snake bites. Then again (and forgive my cynicism again) if you are so dumb you believe the only way to show devotion to your god is to carry around poisonous snakes then the world is probably better off without you.

I myself have often looked down at Mark 16:9-20 in my english bible and wondered why modern publishers chose to even put the long ending in. Especially back when Metzger of all people headed up the NRSV. Then again I look at my bible and wonder what the pastorals are doing in there too.

I am looking forward to being able to see Sinaiticus online. I miss my days at TWU. It is a christian school and has a lot of problems but they have the largest microfiche and microfilm collection of manuscripts in canada , and they have an exact replica of Vaticanus.

All I know is that your a man if you read the KJV, and you sit down to pee if you read any other version.

That is pretty much the funniest thing ever. I guess the unicorns will have to take a back seat to this.
